Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who stop using popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People buying such drugs should be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become starving," said a patient.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
